Where to Find the Best Vegan Food in Baños Ecuador (2024 Guide)

If you’re looking for the best Vegan or Vegetarian food in Banos, Ecuador, we’ve got you covered. You’ll find a surprising amount of delicious options, which I’ll go through below. I’ll also include my personal favorites and recommendations to help you easily find tonight’s dinner!

The Mercado

Fresh Produce Market where you can purchase Vegan Food in Banos, Ecuador

We’ve gotta start with acknowledging the amazing options for fresh fruit and veggies you’ve got in Banos, Ecuador… check out the Mercado on Ambato and C. Juan Leon Mera, open from 7 am – 5 pm daily.

You can load up on all the fruits and vegetables you’ll be able to carry for under ten bucks.

Bring cash (smaller bills or dollar coins will be easiest!)

During my time in Baños, I made a habit of stocking up here on broccoli, spinach, and cauliflower (along with fresh fruit) and then visiting the Indian Restaurant below for several dishes to-go.

I’d mix the to-go dishes with all my fresh veggies, and have plenty to feast for days.

Sher E Punjab Rincon de la India

Sher E Punjab serves Vegan Food in Baños, Ecuador

Top of my list is this amazing Indian restaurant, located at the corner of Eugenio Especio and Pastaza. You can check out their full Vegan Menu below, and here are my recommendations…

First, don’t miss the Mushroom Chilly — out of this world!

My other personal favorites include the Baingan Bhartha (eggplant), Aloo Gobhi (cauliflower and potatoes), and Vegetable Samosas.

During my time in Baños, I’d frequently order several dishes for take-out and stock up on fresh broccoli, cauliflower, and assorted veggies from the Mercado or one of the multiple nearby shops.

I’d top the rice and veggies with delicious portions of eggplant, curries, and that Mushroom Chilly, and I’d have enough to feast for days.

check out their full Vegan menu, here…

Arepas to Go

Another one not to miss is Arepas to Go…. absolutely amazing food, with vegan and vegetarian options.

The vegan arepa is stuffed with sauteed peppers and veggies, plantains, black beans, and a very generous portion of avocado. At five bucks, it’s a super filling meal. The Empanadas are equally delicious!

The menu is simple enough…. Arepas are $5, and Empanadas are $2.50.

Vegetarian or Vegan options available for both. Also, a nice selection of coffees, juices, and mineral water.

The owners are super friendly and sweet, even offering Wifi as soon as they saw me pull out my laptop. Grab to go, or dine in- it’s an adorable little spot.

Go support their biz, and get some of the best food around.

My Veg

If you want a full menu of vegetarian and vegan options, head over to My Veg Restaurant, for plenty of plant based dishes along with smoothies, kombucha, mineral water, coffee, and a selection of fresh juices.

Try the Summer Salad — a simple, perfect blend of flavors… with fresh tomato, onion, avocado, a tangy dressing and toasted bread. The Burrito Bowl is also filling and delicious!

scroll through their menu below…

Sativa Studio Cafe

And finally, be sure to visit the charming Sativa Studio Cafe for another full menu of vegetarian and vegan options, plus an adorable atmosphere.

Check out their full menu below, which includes plant-based burgers and burritos, veggie lasagna, tamales, pasta dishes, and their “Seven Grains” superfood combo.

Appetizers include hummus and pita, veggie soup, and chips and guacamole.

You’ve also got a selection of beer, wine, and cocktails along with soft drinks, smoothies, kombucha, and a whole array of juices and “Carribean Drinks”

Check out their menu here…

Buenos Dias, Valparaiso!! 🇨🇱 Buenos Dias, Valparaiso!! 🇨🇱
✨ La Paz, Bolivia has a special kind of magic. ✨ La Paz, Bolivia has a special kind of magic. Timeless and ageless. Old and new. High rise buildings and cobblestone streets.

✨ Passionate political and social unrest mixed with music and art, endless festivals and celebrations, traditional native culture woven deep into everyday life, and some of the nicest people I’ve ever met (even in a year of traveling through Latin America where everyone is warm and welcoming and amazing).

✨ La Paz captured me and kept me here for a month longer than I’d planned cause I just didn’t want to leave.

✨ I haven’t posted much cause the days have been packed- but time flies and my three months here are at their end.

✨ The experience of landing in a place that’s wildly unfamiliar, and then having it become home, has been the most profound part of nomad-ing (for a year next month 😮) — and that’s nowhere more true than here.

✨ And then there’s the experience of leaving a place that feels so connected, SO much a part of me, now.

✨ So with deep reverence for the people, the culture, the land that’s captivating and mysterious and beautiful, the energy that poured through me here, all the experiences that can’t be grasped, and the connections to stay…. sharing a glimpse of my love for this ageless, timeless place.

Reunion with my nomad friend @diana_mirs who I met Reunion with my nomad friend @diana_mirs who I met in Buenos Aires… tonight we saw an amazing traditional Bolivian performance of masks/ dance/ music/ improv/ powerful drama/ confetti/ who knows what all was happening, because much of the Spanish was too fast for me to follow. But, such a cool night! So fun to cross paths with Diana again and to imagine/ guess where we’ll meet up next. #nomadlife
one month in, and I’m in love with La Paz. 🥰 one month in, and I’m in love with La Paz. 🥰
.
with the people I’ve met, with the land, with the way native culture is so embedded into daily life (as I understand, this is largely the work of former President Evo Morales, whose work included protection of indigenous practices and making 36 native languages official 😮)
.
we’ve just passed the coldest day of the year - super chilly since I got here- but now it’s rapidly warming up, and there seems to be little in between, climate-wise at 12,000 feet.
.
I’ve experienced some pretty intense physical effects from the altitude- and also there’s an extreme, pristine clarity to the air, a different dimension of focus, and all the energy pouring through 🏔️
.
also, yes, there WAS an attempted coup last week, centered less than 2 miles from me, and I’m fine
.
the political tumult is layered as the people continue to strive for economic balance and a better life, and an energy of fire and spirit pours through
.
and the beauty is everywhere, the mountains surrounding in a protective embrace, the views of the city lights from the “Monticulo” divine, the coca leaves and tea truly a sacred gift, and the spirit in the land and the people heartwarming and genuine and gentle and fiercely loving.
.
so much more to share, but here’s my experiences of June capture in #1secondeveryday
